Approximately 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then found multiple other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state early analysis show the fluid was most likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its source; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.
City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior representative said the vandalism rendered him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, mentioning the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in 2020.
