Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players will gain the option to challenge particular calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
